Stats - Airline's market share Feb07

Source: BS

February 22, 2007 02:00 IST

In the 42 months since Air Deccan became a credible and stable challenger to the erstwhile ruling triumvirate of Jet Airways, Indian Airlines and Sahara, the new entrants have garnered about 44 per cent of share of the market.

According to the figures for January, budget carriers alone -- such as SpiceJet, GoAir, IndiGo, apart from Deccan -- have 34 per cent share of the market. A year ago, the figure was only 20.8 per cent.

The market share of Kingfisher Airlines, a full-service airline that took off in May 2005, has increased to 10 per cent. SpiceJet's has increased to 8 per cent. GoAir, IndiGo, Paramount and Indus account for the rest.

In August 2003, when Deccan took off as the country's first no-frills carrier, Jet, IA and Sahara controlled the entire market.

Indian Airlines' share at that stood at a handsome 35 per cent.

Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation predicts the low cost carrier market share in India will reach 70 per cent by 2010, making it one of the world's leading LCC markets in terms of total market penetration.

Deccan, which has become the second biggest domestic airline after Jet in terms of market share, has widened its lead over the number three, Indian Airlines.

The market share of Air Deccan in January stood at 20.8 per cent, according to industry sources, while that of Indian Airlines was 17 per cent.

A spokesperson for Indian Airlines, however, said the state-owned carrier was firmly entrenched in the number two slot.

Disputing the figures, the spokesperson said: "The way other airlines calculate market share is different from the way we do. We are way ahead in revenue per passenger kilo metre. Moreover, the passengers in our international flights are not counted in the normal market share calculations."

Some FMCG Stats

Source: http://www.rediff.com/money/2007/feb/06dabur.htm (Dabur Strategy)

Some FMCG Stats

Tootpaste – Rs. 25 billion segment

Shampoo – Rs 22 billion

Personal Wash – Rs 5 billion

Dabur Vatika is Rs 1 billion brand

There's a flipside, though. Indiscriminate use of the brand across price points may dilute the brand equity. Returning to the Vatika example, the brand is a premium product in hair oil, a top-end product in shampoo, but a mid-level priced soap.

Dabur, too, is present across the spectrum in over a dozen products -- from premium chyawanprash and honey to low-end toothpowder, addressing very different consumer groups. Dabur, of course, says it is careful not to over-stretch its brands.

Diamond Doctors - BW25Dec2006

Source: BW25Dec2006.

Global retail jwellery trade is $56-Billion worth.
De Beers' Diamond Trading Company (DTC) controls 50% of Global Diamond Trade.
DTC sells its rough diamonds only to the sightholders who, in turn process and release them to the market.93 DTC sightholders (Dec 06) worldwide out of which 37 are from India.
Indian sightholders account for 60% of DTC's global sales.
Term of a Sightholder lasts 30 months, after which one has to be evaluated again.
DTC and sightholders often work together on marketing initiatives.

Sightholders hold a respectable status in diamond fraternity.
This is a high value business and is based on trust and so the diamond fraternity is close-knit.
Most of the sightholders and diamond merchants have their offices in two buildings - Prasad chambers and Pancharatna building.
Tolerance for outsiders is low in this fraternity.

Throughout the 60s and 70s, diamond traders in Gujarat set up their business in Mumbai.
Two tradional communities in this business have been Jains from Palanpur and Kathiawaris.
Legend goes - initially business was run by Palanpuris and the processing of stones was done by Kathiawari labourers. Eventually they grew from labourers to small entrepreneurs. Overtime Palanpuri businessmen introduced their trustworthy Kathiawari subordinates into the trade.

A very good idea!!!

Reference: www.springwise.com

Spy Media, a Silicon Valley-based news photo marketplace, lets both amateur and professional photographers sell
their photos at a price they set.

They've just added a new twist: buyers can request a photo of an event, place, person, product or whatever, and
place a bounty on the image. Buyer sets the price, and the first photographer with the right image gets paid.
Current bounties include "Would like a picture of my first home once owned in SJ, CA" (USD 20), and "Red Bull
Contest - The Photo with the Prettiest Girl and a Red Bull" (USD 100).

This takes the citizen journalism model (which we've written about before: ScooptWords, Reporter.co.za, and OhmyNews
) and turns it into an online photo classified system. Anyone, anywhere can tap into the global brain, and can send
photographers on 'image errands'. Besides news-related bounties, one can imagine FMCG companies requesting
real-world shots of in-store marketing efforts, or potential homebuyers looking for realistic photos of a property's
surroundings.

Not to mention all the other errands you can get minipreneurs to do... Time to start up a global errands
intermediary, with easy access to members from Bangkok to Boston?

Memorable Quote - Any Given Sunday

Memorable Quote - Any Given Sunday.

You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either
game - life or football - the margin for error is so small. I mean, one
half a step too late or too early and you don't quite make it. One half
second too slow, too fast and you don't quite catch it. The inches we need
are everywhere around us. They're in every break of the game, every minute,
every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear
ourselves and everyone else around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with
our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when add up all those
inches, that's gonna make the fucking difference between winning and
losing! Between living and dying!

I'll tell you this, in any fight it's the guy whose willing to die whose
gonna win that inch. And I know, if I'm gonna have any life any more it's
because I'm still willing to fight and die for that inch, because that's
what living is, the six inches in front of your face. Now I can't make you
do it. You've got to look at the guy next to you, look into his eyes. Now I
think ya going to see a guy who will go that inch with you. Your gonna see
a guy who will sacrifice himself for this team, because he knows when it
comes down to it your gonna do the same for him. That's a team gentlemen,
and either, we heal as a team, or we will die as individuals. That's
football guys, that's all it is. Now what are you gonna do?
